Emilia-Romagna Region (lead partner)

Emilia-Romagna Region is located in the north-eastern part of Italy. It is divided in 9 provinces: Piacenza, Parma, Modena, Reggio Emilia, Bologna, Ferrara, Forlì-Cesena, Rimini and it includes 348 municipalities. Emilia-Romagna has about 4.5 million inhabitants.
From the territorial viewpoint, Emilia-Romagna capitalises on its advantageous strategic geographical position in fact it is a crucial national transport knot since, besides being a junction to the TEN-T trans-European networks, it is easily accessible from all of the major roads, highways and train connections in Italy. For this reason it is characterized by relevant passenger and freight transport flows crossing Italy. Moreover, it has also four airports and numerous well-equipped ports.

Reggio Emilia hub

Reggio Emilia, located in the Northern side of Italy, in the Emilia Romagna region, is a middle sized city (170.000 inhabitants) which is going to have its High Speed Station built and operative by the end of year 2012.
The HS station of Reggio Emilia will be a sort of “pilot case” in Italy, of station located “in line” and out of the city centre. At the moment, the main issue seems regarding the station position: in fact, being a station serving more cities in the area, it has been located outside the Reggio Emilia city.
The main challenge for Reggio Emilia thus is to communicate the HS station positive inducts by disposing of more efficient and “permeable” infrastructural systems serving the HS station to the benefit of the whole station catchment area.
