Railway Company Slovakia (project partner 10)

Railway Company Slovakia, joint - stock company (ZSSK, a.s.) has been established as of 1 January 2005. The founder of ZSSK, a.s. and the only owner of shares is the Slovak Republic. In accordance with the actual legislation, the shareholder rights in ZSSK, a.s. are executed by the Ministry of Transport, Construction and Regional Development of the Slovak Republic (MTCRD SR).

Company was founded with the aim to offer railway passenger transport services. ZSSK, a.s. was formed through split of former incumbent Railways of the Slovak Republic to three independent business units, by which railway organization attained new institutional and organisational framework compatible with legislation of EC.

ZSSK, a.s. has exclusive rights on the market of railway passenger transport. It is performs the public service obligations (PSO), providing railway passenger transport service for Slovak region, which is compensated by the state budget resources. Additionally to this, it performs commercial activities in railway passenger transport too.

 Bratislava and Žilina nodes

Bratislava is located in the South-west of the Slovak republic. Bratislava is the capital and and, with a population of about 460,000, also the largest city of the Slovak republic. Bratislava is the political, cultural, and economic centre of Slovakia. It is the seat of the Slovak president, the parliament, and the Slovak Executive. Three capitals, Vienna, Prague and Budapest are situated close to Bratislava.
Bratislava railway hub lies on the priority axis No. 17, 22 and 23 of the TEN-T network.

Žilina is located in the North-west of the Slovak republic and with a population of about 85 000 inhabitants it ranks among the largest cities in Slovakia. Žilina is situated around 200 km from Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. The city of Žilina is the seat of the Žilina Region. Together with the Region, it keeps a stable position of the second or third place in gross domestic product per inhabitant.
Žilina railway hub lies on the priority axis No. 23 of the TEN-T network.

  • Technical expertise detailing the status quo of the Žilina and Bratislava nodes in terms of operational and quality standards in the perspective of the Public Transport Partnership development.
    • Detection of traffic flows, the current regional links and the demand for transport services in respect of cross-regional links and existing projects
    • Technical expertise on the preliminary definition of options of interventions for the Public Transport Partnership development.
    • Technical expertise for services and timetables analysis in Žilina and Bratislava also with reference to neighbouring nodes (Vienna, Brno).
  • Design of interventions on info on board systems for users, integrated ticketing in the Žilina and Bratislava nodes.
    • evaluate the benefits of functional integration Bratislava and Zilina nodes with other nodes
  • Technical expertise on economic model and needed steps for Public Transport Partnership development.
